What does sustainability even mean anymore?
Have we lost the plot in the pursuit of the term, which can readily be found from farmers markets to Wal-Mart?
One fresh take can be found in the approach by Hotel Milka, a Slovenia gem nestled in a bounty of natural treasure.
With a global ethos, elevated by its local approach, this crafted spot near Triglav National Park demonstrates how “responsibility” may better light the path towards transformative action. From the ground up, Hotel Milka is guided by a responsibility to nature, people, and community.
There are a number of proposed fixes in this world that involve clever marketing and slapping a pretty sustainability label onto something, be that a business, a product, or even our lifestyles. We all know that’s not going to cut it. I’m glad to say, however, that this is not how I see what’s being done in this corner of the Julian Alps. Rethinking the relationships with our food, energy, and materials, as Hotel Milka has done, is a good start to facing the challenges that are not just on the horizon, but are felt already.
We don’t need to be involved with a boutique hotel to partake in this process. Human ingenuity is recognized as a quality that has brought us to this point; there’s not a community or industry that wouldn’t benefit from it now to add collective resilience in the face of uncertainty. It’s time to get creative, folks, in whatever corner of the world you’re working, living, and (should we continue to be so lucky) playing.
Thanks to the dedicated and inspiring team at Milka for curating their vision of what can be, into what is.
